Alan Falkenstein

Alan Dean Falkenstein, 52, Farmington, Minn., died Jan. 5, 2005, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 1443 N. 26 St., Bismarck. Burial will be at the Ghylin Union Cemetery, Wilton.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Henry W. Anderson Mortuary, Apple Valley, Minn. Family visitation will be held at the church after the service.

Alan was born on July 7, 1952, to Leslie and Phyllis (Johnson) Falkenstein Bismarck. He was raised in Wing and Wilton. He graduated with honors from Wilton High and NDSU. After graduation, Alan began his career with the FAA in Minneapolis as an electronics engineer.

He transferred to the regional office in Des Plaines, Ill., where he worked for 12 years. He then spent three years at the Chicago ARTCC before transferring to the Minneapolis ARTCC, where he worked for nine years. He then transferred to Anchorage, Alaska, where he worked as manager of operations for five years. Alan had worked for the FAA for 30 years before being diagnosed with ALS.

Alan loved to fish especially for the Alaska Salmon. For the past five years he has spent all of his spare time traveling by motor home, boat or canoe to fish all over Alaska. He loved fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, woodworking, aviation and travel. Alan married Jaclyn Sawicke in 1972, and to this union was born three daughters: Hope, Charity and Trudi Falkenstein, Falcon Heights, Minn. Alan married Shirley Kuehne Feb. 23, 2004, and they resided in Farmington. Alan was able to remain in his home with care from his loving wife Shirley and daughter Charity, with help from Hope and Trudi, the ALS Association and the Fairview Hospice Team; as well as friends that helped when needed.

He is survived by wife Shirley Kuehne; his three daughters, Hope, Charity and Trudi; one step-daughter, Jessica Kuehne, San Diego, Calif.; one step-son, Adam Kuehne, Farmington; his sister, Joan (Dale) Hanson, Spearfish, S.D.; one brother, Kurt, Regan; his foster brother, Jim (Sharon) Walker, Cass Lake, Minn.; his parents, Leslie and Phyllis Falkenstein, Wilton; his uncle, Clifton (Anne) Falkenstein, Lafayette, Colo.; his aunts, Marjorie Magnuson, Bismarck, Pauline Johnson, Wilton, Faye Johnson, Chesapeake, Va.; one great-aunt, Flora Johnson, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and many other relatives and friends.
